William White

William White was born on 15 February 1815 in Kingston and baptised at the age of 10 Aston Rowant parish church2.jpgon 14 Dec 1825 at Aston Rowant (pictured) in Oxfordshire England. His parents were farmer Eden White (1775-1848) and Mary Rixon (1776-1833).

William met local lass Anne Church (1817-1895) and had two children before their marriage – Mary in January 1838 (baptised as Mary Victoria Church at Aston Rowant on 18 March 1838) and William on 19 March 1843 (baptised William Church 19 Mar 1843).

William and Ann officially married on 4 October 1843 in Aston Rowant, England.

In February 1844 the family arrived in Melbourne aboard the passenger ship “Wallace”. William was aged 26 years, Ann 27 and Mary aged 6. Sadly their infant son William died on board the ship on the voyage out to Australia.

William and Anne (pictured) had ten children – Mary 1838, William 1843, Matilda 1845, William 1846, Jane 1848, Abel 1850, Mark 1853, Robert 1854, Henry 1858 and Ann 1862.

Ann White nee churchTheir firstborn daughter in Australia was Matilda, in 1845 who was baptised at St James, Melbourne. Matilda married another Boho settler in Violet Town in 1864 – Reuban Croxford (1841-1921). Reuban came out on the same ship “Wallace” in 1844 as the White family. Reuban was a neighbour of the White and Britnell families in Kingston Blount (1841 Census).

Another daughter Jane b 1848 in Kew, married another Boho settler – John Field (1846-1927). John had selected land near the White’s farm (CA 9, 10, 11, 48 and 49A Parish of Boho).

William’s English born nephews, brothers Richard and Eden White, also immigrated to Australia in 1848, and settled in Boho.

William was in Boho by 1864, as evidence by the marriage of his daughter Matilda. He appears in the Victorian Post Office directory for Violet Town, residing at Honeysuckle Creek.

William selected 97 acres of land in Boho in 1890.

William died on 25 May 1901 in Violet Town, aged 86, and is buried in the Violet Town Cemetery with his wife Ann. Ann died on 28 Jan 1895.
